Strengthening Connections Across the Sea

On 18 August 2025, Tarwirri and the Indigenous Law and Justice Hub proudly hosted a joint event in Naarm, welcoming twelve Māori law students from Ngā Rangahautira, the Māori Law Students’ Society at Victoria University of Wellington. Their visit was inspired by a strong interest in Indigenous justice work, the Treaty process in Victoria, and exploring potential legal career pathways. The event was generously supported by Lander & Rogers.

The gathering opened with a Welcome to Country by Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Annette Xiberras and a moving yidaki performance by Ganga Giri. In return, our Māori peers shared a beautiful cultural performance, honouring the spirit of reciprocity and solidarity.

Guests then heard from an inspiring line-up of speakers, including Andrew Williams (Tarwirri President), Dr Eddie Cubillo (Associate Dean, Indigenous Programs, Melbourne Law School), and Jaynaya Dwyer (Indigenous Law and Justice Hub, Melbourne Law School), who each spoke about the importance of cross-cultural exchange, solidarity, and advancing Indigenous leadership within the legal profession.

The event created a valuable opportunity to:

  • Welcome and honour our Māori peers in a spirit of cultural solidarity.

  • Connect Māori law students with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and professionals in Victoria.

  • Strengthen relationships across Indigenous legal networks in Naarm and Aotearoa.

  • Promote Indigenous pathways into the legal profession.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Lander & Rogers for hosting and supporting this important occasion. The evening was a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from sharing knowledge, culture, and support across the sea.
