Tarwirri proudly congratulates long-standing and highly respected member, Her Honour Judge Rose Falla, on her historic appointment as a Judge of the County Court of Victoria.

Judge Falla’s appointment marks a significant milestone for the Victorian legal profession and for First Nations peoples across the State. Her Honour is the first Aboriginal person appointed as a Judge of the County Court of Victoria, following her earlier historic appointment in 2013 as the first Aboriginal person appointed as a Magistrate in Victoria.

Judge Falla is a proud Wotjobaluk, Wemba Wemba and Mutti Mutti woman, and the daughter of the much respected Elder, the late Uncle Kevin Coombes. Throughout her distinguished legal career, Her Honour has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to justice, leadership, and improving outcomes for Aboriginal communities within the Victorian legal system.

Since commencing as a Magistrate in January 2013, Judge Falla has sat extensively in the Criminal Division of the Magistrates’ Court, hearing both summary and indictable matters, including serious sexual offence matters.

In 2020, Her Honour was appointed the inaugural Supervising Magistrate for Koori Justice, assuming statewide responsibility for the Magistrates’ Koori Courts, Koori Family Violence Court, Koori VOCAT, implementation of inquest findings, and the implementation of the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria Self-Determination Plan.

Judge Falla has also played a significant role in strengthening and advancing culturally responsive justice initiatives across Victoria and continues to be a highly respected leader, mentor and role model within the legal profession and broader community.

Tarwirri acknowledges and celebrates Her Honour’s extraordinary contribution to community, the Victorian legal system, and future generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students, lawyers and judicial officers.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Her Honour Judge Rose Falla on this well-deserved and historic appointment.
